Rory McIlroy’s earnings to top 100 million pounds after his stellar victory at US Open
Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, with his recent victory at the US Open at Congressional Country Club last week, is all set to bag in lucrative endorsements and multi-million pound deals from commercial sports companies.
The young McIlroy, who is just 22 years old and has already bagged his first major title, and that too with an overwhelming lead, is bound to be the next target of the sports giants, many of whom are already looking for a prospective ambassador after Tiger
Woods’ continuous downslide in the sport.
McIlroy generated annual earnings of 5.3-million pounds, last year. The young golfer is expected to top 100-million pounds in terms of sponsorships, endorsement deals and all the hidden money that is often a part of the sports, reported by The Daily Express.
Several top players in the world charge, what is often called “appearance money” for playing in specific tours around the world. The Northern Irishman will certainly be in a much commanding position to demand millions in terms of appearance money.
McIlroy’s victory turned out to be one of the wildest in the event’s history where he broke the lowest 72-hole record of 12-under posted by the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk. He finished off his US Open bid with the lowest ever score
of 16-under, with a staggering lead of eight shots to the nearest contender.
McIlroy suffered a devastating defeat in the first major of the season, the Masters at Augusta this April, where he threw away his four-shot overnight lead in the final round. As he opened up with six-under at Congressional last week, many feared the young
Irishman will again collapse in the subsequent rounds, something McIlroy was able to avoid successfully.
"Going back to Augusta this year, I felt like that was a great opportunity to get my first major. It didn't quite work out," McIlroy said. "But to come back straight away at the U.S. Open and win that is nice. You can always call yourself a major champion,
and hopefully after this, I can call myself a multiple major champion."
Young McIlroy drew comparisons from Woods’ earlier days when he used to thrash fields, romping to victories one major after another. He has now soared to number four in the world rankings.
