Rory Mcllroy speaks about Tiger Woods at the start of Honda Classic Championship - PGA Tour update
Rory Mclleroy, the 21-year-old Northern Irish golfer, spoke up against Tiger Woods and claimed that the ‘Tiger’ is dominant no more. The young golfer stated that the legendary Woods is playing just like any ordinary golfer and there is little chance that he would be able to climb back up to his previous rank.
“I wasn't playing against Tiger Woods when he had that aura. I was watching on TV! I remember getting nervous when I first met him. I was 15….But Tiger is not playing as well as he was even a couple of years ago, never mind going back to the late 1990s and early 2000s, when he was at his best. I'm not sure we are going to see him dominate again the way he did.”
Mcllroy’s candid statement was criticized by many fellow golfers including world number two, Lee Westwood, when he termed young Mcllroy’s statement as one that reflects his inexperience in the sport. “That’s the answer a 21-year-old will give, isn’t it?” Westwood said in response to Mcllroy’s statement, “A 37-year-old will be a little wiser . . . I will have a word with Rory later.”
Westwood has spoken on several occasions about Tiger Woods return to the top slot and how well-deserved he is for the status. "Having played with Tiger since 1997 there's an old saying that class is permanent and form is fickle - and he's the classiest player I've ever played with,” Westwood stated.
Mcllroy, currently the World number eight, is known for his blunt statements in past interview and press conferences. He has a knack of speaking his mind and is able to spice things up. He made several eye-brow raising statements in the start of the Ryder Cup last year and received media attention.
Tiger Woods has currently taken a break from his sporting obligations and is working on his swing with his coach Sean Foley for next week’s World Championship in Miami. He hopes to finally win a tournament after a one year winning drought.
