Rory Sabbatini missed the Memorial Tournament title by an inch
Rory Sabbatini cared an equal-par 72 in the final round of the Memorial Tournament at the Muirfield Village Golf Club to share the second spot on Sunday, June 3, 2012.
Through 12 holes, Sabbatini had a lead over Tiger Woods, after carding three birdies against two bogeys. However, he failed to hold onto his lead when Woods made a late charge on the final day.
Moreover, he believes that he should have made a birdie on the 15th hole, which could have helped him put some extra pressure on his rivals.
"I knew that I was going to have to make birdies, and I knew 15 was going to be a key hole," Sabbatini said. "I hit a good drive and just didn't execute on the second shot, and from there it was just a tough position, had to just try and play for par. So
not making birdie there really opened the door for everything to unfold".
While he missed the par putt on the 16th hole, Woods took the lead by carding three birdies on the final four holes he played.
Therefore, Sabbatini was supposed to make an eagle on the final hole in order to force the game to enter the playoffs, as he was two strokes behind Woods while teeing off on the 18th hole.
However, he failed while allowing Woods to register the 73 PGA Tour victory of his career. In addition to that, it was his fifth victory at Memorial.
Sabbatini looked really disappointed at the end of the tournament, as he missed a golden opportunity to record the seventh victory of his career.
The golf commentators believe that he played really good, especially when the course was behaving really weird and it was really tough to score birdies.
The only major mistake that he made was on the 16th hole that allowed Woods to take the lead while shattering his confidence for the final two holes.
Therefore, he put them under pressure forcing him to stay at the same score at which he started in the afternoon. His final score was seven-under par 281.
In the meantime, the overnight leader Spencer Levin had a disappointing day, as he carded a three-over par 75 to slip to a lower position on the leaderboard to tie for the fourth position.
