Rory Sabbatini talks about his life and recent win at the Honda Classic - Golf News
Rory Sabbatini was over the moon after his victory at last week’s Honda Classic and it had more significance than just being his 1st PGA Tour win in the past 2 years. The title was “very special” to the golfer as it came after
his recent serious health issues surrounding his life. The South African got to celebrate both his career and his life at Palm Beach Gardens, the venue for the event.
The player was seen wearing a wide-brimmed hat as he gave his wife a jubilant hug. Incidentally, in September last year, his wife spent 2 days in a cardiac intensive care unit after she gave birth to the couple’s third child. Later on in the same month,
the golfer himself underwent an operation to remove a spot of cancerous skin from his face, in case you were all wondering why his choice of headgear was so significant.
To add to all his troubles, his father-in-law had a brush with skin cancer, but Sabbatini told reporters, after the 6th triumph of his career at the tour, that thankfully all three of them were now on their way to recovery. This win marks the
first time he has won on the tour since his 2009 HP Byron Nelson Championship title win.
“Each win... has its own unique qualities to it. It's been a stretch; had a tough road. So it definitely is kind of a turning of a new leaf. It really does feel good. It does feel like a fresh start in a sense,” said the golfer after he won against Y.E.
Yang with a one stroke lead.
His victory at Honda Classic might’ve been narrow when you consider the one stroke difference between him and Y.E Yang, but it would discount the composure with which he played the entire tournament while the rest of the field were shooting golf balls all
over the place. In fact going into the final round Sabbatini had a five stroke lead over the nearest competitor.
A big part of his win was his putting and Rory gave credit where it was due.
He said, “The putter I was using before, I was very confident from 10 feet and in. But it just felt like those 10- to 20-footers; I... was not getting the kind of performance I was wanting. The putter I went to [at Honda], it's been performing fantastically.
It's actually quite bizarre. I've never quite had as much confidence in a new putter as I have in this one.”
The Honda Classic was the first time that he used the putter and what brilliant results did he get.
Sabbatini is also one player who has been widely criticized for not being able to keep his emotions in check while he’s out there on the course. Talking on the issue, the golfer said that he wasn’t all that proud of everything he had done in the past but
that he was in the learning to be better. He says the biggest motivation for him to make this change was the desire to be a better role model for his children.
The pro golfer is now planning on opening a foundation that will aim to help underprivileged people that are dealing with skin cancer problems.
