Rosa Salvaje lands a big win in the Shakespeare Caress Stakes at Saratoga
The Lisa Lewis trained, Rosa Salvaje, coming on the back of a victory, used her winning momentum to land the $100,000 Shakespeare Caress Stakes at Saratoga on 30th July, 2012.
The filly landed two in a row when she emerged victorious from the Shakespeare Caress Stakes. With rider Alex Solis on her back, she aced the 5 ½ furlong race, and completed it in 1 minute and 03.50 seconds.
Holiday For Kitten finished second, while the third place was secured by Zermatt.
The pace of the race was set by Ballistic Sue, but Rosa Salvaje made a move on the 8th pole and overtook the runner. She managed to keep the rest of the competition including Holiday for Kitten and Zermatt at bay.
With this victory, the daughter of Chapel Royal, out of mare Navarro Rose, has an overall record of 4-2-0 in 12 starts and earnings worth $156,555.
This was the second start for the William C. Schettine owned filly, who claimed an Allowance Optional Claimer at Gulfstream Park on 16th January, 2012, where she completed the five furlong distance in 55.58 seconds.
Trainer Lisa Lewis was particularly pleased with the way her charge performed in this race. She said the lay-off worked well in her favour.
The filly sustained an injury and had a bad foot abscess after her victory in January, but she has recovered well since then and is back in winning form.
She discussed the future plans of the runner and said:
“She was ready to run at Woodbine and then we decided to try and point her for this race. I trained her very hard coming into it, I felt she was ready and doing terrific, and we thought it was worth coming down here to try and win his own race.”
This victory was particularly symbolic for the four-year-old filly, since the race was sponsored by her owner, William Schettine of William Schettine’s Signature Stallions.
The victory of Rosa Salvaje was also welcomed by jockey Alex Solis, who needed a good race. The rider mounted, Blue Heart, in the Wonder Where Stakes on 29thJuly, 2012, where the duo finished sixth.
