Rosa Thompson, Marie Dejean and Maria Abecasis storm in Les Bourdaines: ASP 6-Star Swatch Girls Pro France
Three surfers, Rosa Thompson of New Zealand, Marie Dejean of France and Maria Abecasis of Portugal stood out and performed brilliantly in heat 3, 4 and 5 of the opening day of the ASP 6-Star Swatch Girls Pro France at Les Bourdaines in France, on Wednesday,
June 1.
In heat 3, the New Zealander Thompson got off to a flying start against Wes Noble of Great Britain and Garazi Sanchez of Ukraine.
Thompson won heat 3 with a score of 1.70, while the British surfer placed second with 0.65 points. The Ukrainian surfer, Sanchez couldn't make any impression on the judges and rolled out of the tournament.
It was one of the most challenging heats of the day as the conditions didn't allow any surfer to settle in nicely. The surfers had to brave the testing waves at Les Bourdaines, and many suffered the wrath of mother-nature and got eliminated from the competition.
Heat 4 saw a toe to toe battle between Marie Dejean of France and Brazil's Barbara Segatto. Dejean grabbed the highest heat score of 8.75, while Segatto ended second with a total score of 8.25, just 0.50 points behind the leader. Joanne Dennison was placed
third with 5.75 points. Another French surfer, Libier Emilie wound up fourth with a total score of 4.40 in the following heat.
Dennison and Emilie as a result of their below par performance, got eliminated from the competition and won't be able to feature in round 2 of the ASP 6-Star Swatch Girls Pro France.
In heat 5, the Portuguese surfer Maria Abecasis claimed the highest heat score of 8.75. Meah Collins of USA had a poor day at work as she couldn't handle the swaying waves effectively. However, the American did manage a score of 3.75, which placed her second
in heat 5. Raine Jackson of Great Britain rounded off the top three with 2.45 points.
Abecasis' performance did embarrass the rest of the surfers in her heat, as she seemed in complete control facing the waves and gave a very decent performance as opposed to her opponents, who didn't seem comfortable at any point in the heat.
The second round of the ASP 6-Star Swatch Girls Pro France will begin tomorrow and surfers from every part of the country will compete for top honours.
