Rose, Lawrie secure victories for Europe, whereas Dustin Johnson carries the American flag
Justin Rose continued the good run of form he was in. Meanwhile, Rose started off brilliantly against Phil Mickelson, taking the lead at the first hole. The Englishman again birdied the second hole to go 2-Up right at the start.
Phil, however, had the experience on his side and he showed his class when he levelled things up by winning the fourth and fifth hole.
From the fifth hole onwards, there was a see-saw battle, which saw both the players taking and giving up the lead. Europe went into the lead on the 9th but Lefty pulled it back by birdying the 11th.
The Americans then took the lead when Phil won the 14th hole. A couple of pars meant that Rose had to pull off something on the 17th and the 18th hole.
To everybody’s surprise the Englishman won the final two holes, leaving Mickelson on his knees. Rose managed to secure a vital point for his team by defeating Mickelson 1-Up.
Paul Lawrie was the fifth in line for Europe and he was up against the rookie, Brandt Snedeker. The rookie so far had a good tournament and he showed no sign of nerves at the start but it was Paul’s day all along.
Lawrie took the lead by winning the fourth hole and from there onwards, it was no turning back. In total, Lawrie won seven holes, where as Brandt could only manage to win two.
The match was already over by the time the players reached the 15th hole. Lawrie thrashed the rookie, Snedeker, by 5&3.
Dustin Johnson and Nicolas Colsaerts was an interesting matchup. Both of them are known for their big booming drives. Europe was already flying high but Johnson stepped up for Davis Love III at the right time.
Johnson took the ascendency right from the start. He won the first hole to go 1-Up. The Belgian levelled things up on the fourth but the American quickly took the lead back by birdying the sixth.
Johnson went 2-Up by the 11th hole but the Belgian bomber had levelled things up on the 13th. However, after that, Colsaerts ran out of gas and Dustin won three consecutive holes to win 3&2 after 16 holes.
