Question:

Rose Flowers wont Open?

Hey all,

On my roses for some reason the blooms wont open all the way. Its like, they open but in a very weird shape. I treat them with anti-fungal spray and also give them plant food.

Could it be the soil quality? My Hibiscus plant is in the same soil and its doing great!

Any ideas?

  1. Whenever I get roses as gifts, they don't open all the way either.  I wish I could help but it's a puzzle.

  2. You most likely have thrips. check this link to see if you can ID any of the other signs. http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES...

Excess water can also cause buds to stay closed.

  3. It's probably aphids. Get a Horticultural Oil or spray for aphids. You could try spraying them with some joy dishwashing liquid and water to kill the aphids. Ladybugs in the garden work well since they eat aphids. They can be purchased from a landscaping company.

  4. Balling:

Flowers that don't open may be "balling" as a result of wet weather. This affects some varieties of many-petalled roses more than others, where the bud closes up into a ball and never opens. Nothing to do but wait for better weather, or plant varieties which tolerate rain better.

other causes of buds that won't open are thrips, and a disease called botrytis (suspect this if the color of the bud goes dark gray)
