They were not real people.  There were plenty of real people who survived the Titanic whose stories were very interesting, and I suppose the makers of the film must have been aware of them, but they chose to present a purely fictional story with fictional characters.

Historians have found passengers with the same names and of the same general social standings, but there's no evidence to suggest that that isn't just a coincidence. The characters in the movie are still essentially fictional.
