Rose of sharon tree care?

Question

a friend gave me two rose of sharon tree saplings and i was just wondering what to do with them, where to plant them, water care, lighting, etc. also i have alot of small ants and slugs and i want to know if that will hamper ther growth.

i had many of them, the ones in full sun and drier ground grew slowly, the ones in the backyard were shaded and the ground was damp all year round - they multiplied like weeds
