Question:

Rosemary plant...?

I just bought a little rosemary plant. Right now it's inside in the container I bought it in.

I killed my last rosemary, although it was so big & woody when I bought it, I wonder if it needed to be in the ground...

Anyway, how much water does it need? Someone told me they don't need much at all, but I don't want to under-water.

Also, in 2 weeks I'll be moving & I'll have a yard! I'm assuming it will do well in the ground, but I live in TX & it gets very hot here. Any advice?

  1. My rosemary plants tend to die in pots.  The one I planted in the ground is thriving even with no care.  Maybe I gave the rosemary plants in pots too much care.

  2. Little Rosemary may love Texas if it's not swamp Texas.  Dry Texas and the little girl will feel right at home.  Rosemary is from the Mediterranean area, so the love well drained soil, heat and not too much rain.  They are not happy with no water and mine will tell you, "We need something.........."  Once a week and they are happy.  Your container girl will need twice a week watering, I'm guessing.  Let the soil dry a bit to the touch before watering.  Realize a drier soil may shrink, so set her in a sink or bucket of water and let her slurp awhile, rewet her soil completely, you give the soil a little push to get it back out to the sides of the pot and everyone will be happy.  \

They do prefer to be outside since they need a dormant period in their growth and home environments don't have dormant times.

  3. I live in Austin.  Here rosemarys grow into sizable shrubs when they are planted outdoors.  If you will be near Austin keep your plant in its pot until you get here then set it out.  And, yes rosemary does not require a lot of water.
