Question:

Roses in South Mississippi??

We are moving to South Mississippi soon, and getting a house built with an old fashioned front porch (even want rockers). I would like to plant a border of roses and lavender along the front of the porch, with climbing roses up the pillars. We will be about 40 miles in from the Gulf. The porch will get the afternoon and evening sun. What roses grow well there(preferably scented)? Does lavender grow that far south?

Thank you.

  1. Look for any roses with the Fortuniana rootstock. It's specially made for growing in the south (I live on the gulf in FL).

Lavender doesnt do well in the south, probably because of the humidity.

Below is a URL that might help. Although the link references FL, the atmospheric conditions are almost the same throughout the year.

  2. I would grow old roses. Check out the Antique Rose Emporium for selections. As for lavender, it is hard to grow in the south because of our humidity. If you do try them, they must have excellent drainage so I would recommend a raised bed. I would look for other type plants though that I could use in place of lavender.

  3. I live in South Georgia and I have a Jacob's ladder that does phenomenal!  Also, lavendar does grow well!  I have the providence varieties and they are nearly 4 feet tall after only 2 years.

Have you thought of trying Mandevilla around your pillars until the roses grow?  Mandevilla will cover the pillars in one season and come in pink, yellow, and red.

  4. my hometown is MCCOMB MISSISSIPPI

i moved to MICHIGAN  at the age of 20.

i love it there!!! i am not sure about lavendar but most likely LILACS which are beautiful and smell very nice also.i prefer the purple ones but the white ones are nice too.i am not sure about the types of roses any will do well i am sure.good luck and enjoy your porch and roses and rocking chairs!!! good luck!!!!
