Roses question...Help! ?

I have roses planted on the side of the house I'm renting (I never go around to that side-some sorta yellowish/blush color rose) but I have started going around there to check them out....anyhoo some of the petals of some of them were wilting, I was gonna cut off the dying flowers but just took the flowers off by hand, and after the flowers were gone noticed that on the stem, which was hidden by the rose flowers there was a little bulb shaped part that looks like the rose petals were growing out of. Should I have cut off the bulby part? There is like a dried up part at the top of the bulby thing, but otherwise it is green. (I would provide a pic but don't at this time have a dig. camera). Help! I can grow veggies but know nothing of roses (PS I had to get some sorta spray cause the leaves look like lace!) Thanx to everyone (or the only person) that can give advice! :)

  1. the bulb lookin' thing is the 'hips' or where the seeds would develop if you left it there... don't need to, cuz if you do the plant will stop making roses..... cut off the hips and another rose will bud somewhere on the plant.... leave the hips in later fall and the plant will go dormant for winter, and that's good..... cut the stem down to where there's five leaves in a bunch, taking off the bulby part and some stem and maybe a couple stems of three leaves.....

the leaves are lacy because of beetles... spray only kills a few , more fly in after you're done spraying... save time... don't bother... the plant will put out new leaves after the bugs are gone..... and it will make a whole new batch of leaves and roses for fall.... if you have  some fertilizer, the plant would appreciate a little to get going again....

  2. I agree with " Meanolmaw "....

But if the leaves are kinda wilty, it's probably a water issue.  Dont forget to water your roses alot unless they are really established.  I have a rose I planted this spring and I water it about 3 times a week.   I also have a big ole climber that's probably 10 yrs old and I only water it when the top leaves on the canes start to curl a little or wilt.

    good luck
