Rosol / Zelenay defeat Fischer / Haider-Maurer in the finals of 2011 Barletta Open
World number 230 in doubles, Lukas Rosol of Czech Republic paired up with the Slovak, Igor Zelenay, crushed the Austrian Pair of Martin Fischer and Andreas Haider-Maurer in the finals of the doubles category at the 2011 Barletta Open in Italy on Saturday. Rosol and Zelenay wrapped up the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, taking barely one hour and four minutes to emerge victorious in the finals of the tournament.
The winning pair cruised in to the finals after crushing the fourth seeded pair of Travis Parrot and Filip Polasek in a hard-bitten battle of three sets. The successful duet, sported an unbeatable exhibition of tennis and worn out their challengers with no difficulty. The duo defeated their contenders in all fields of the game and exploited their weaknesses with much timing to conquer the match.
In the opening set, Rosol and Zelenay served with an acceptable 66 per cent accuracy, without committing a single double fault and collected 58 per cent of points on them. The successful duo created one break opportunity but couldn’t convert it, while their opponents availed 3 out of four break chances they received. On the other hand, the Austrians delivered 2 aces, 52 per cent first serves and had a similar conversion rate of 58 per cent on the first serves. The Austrians didn’t play well and had to surrender the first set to their powerful contenders at 6-3 to lag behind 0-1 in the match.
Rosol and Zelenay didn’t drop their winning momentum in the final set and successfully defended their opponents to outplay them with a 6-2 score line. They delivered a single ace, 57 per cent of first serves and gained 67 per cent of points on them. Moreover, they successfully rescued 67 per cent of breakpoint opportunities as opposed to their opponents meager 25 per cent. It looked as if the final set didn’t bring any luck for Fischer and Haider-Maurer as their faults kept flowing from their raquets consistently. Their double fault count was four in the second set even though they won an impressive 73 per cent win on first serves. The Austrians were broken in the eight game of the second set with a 6-2 score.
Paired for the first time, Rosol and Zelenay won their first ever title at the Barletta Open. This victory has made their duo even stronger and the pair will be looking forward to play together in the upcoming events so far.
