Ross Brawn: Fresh tyres could provide a competitive edge at 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Mercedes AMG team principal, Ross Brawn has said that the fresh tyres could provide them a competitive edge over other contenders in 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix which is to be held on Sunday.
The Brackley based team could not perform well in the qualifying of the fourth race. Where on one hand, Nico Rosberg could only secure fifth place in the grid for the race, his teammate, Michael Schumacher could not even make into Q2.
The seven-time world champion was sitting in the garage while other contenders were seen busy improving their lap timings on track. Moreover, the veteran German driver will face a five-place grid penalty in the race due to his gear box change.
Regardless of the disappointing performances of the team’s pair of drivers, Brawn said that they have not lost the hope for the race while he said that they will take the benefit of fresh sets of tyres in the race which have been saved during the qualifying.
“Maybe that was asking a bit too much in Q3,” Brawn conceded, “but he's got a new set of softs left for the race, which I think will be very important. We were debating how many positions we would concede by keeping one set of tyres and figured it was actually
worth a couple of positions, but we gave up more than we thought! But I think we'll still have an interesting race. We think this is one of the circuits where the advantage of fresh tyres could prove out to be significant.”
In addition, he said that Schumacher could not be able to perform well due to DRS failure during the qualifying.
He also said that they were very much upset due to the problem in DRS activation. Nonetheless, he expressed that they are looking forward to the race with a positive feeling.
It would be important to mention that Mercedes’ innovative DRS-activated F-duct design has made them one of the most competent contenders in this season while they are trying their best to make the necessary improvements and the substantial preparations
for the races ahead.
