Ross Brawn and Adrian Newey predict engine problems in 2014 – Formula 1 news
Ross Brawn and Adrian Newey believe that there will be plenty of uncertainty during the 2014 Formula 1 season, as the new engines will not be reliable.
According to the former of the two, who is the boss at Mercedes, “We will go back to a time such as 20 years ago. The technology is so complex that I expect a lot of failures. There will be a new element of surprise and the failures will not just be the
engines, but the individual components.”
On the other hand, the Red Bull boss said, “The new engines need a lot of cooling, because not only have you got the combustion engine, but the turbocharged parts too. With the electrical side, what we call KERS, that also needs a lot of cooling. The cooling
is a big challenge, the gearbox regulations are also different and there are some aerodynamic changes, so it is a big task.”
Over the past several years, there have been no major changes in Formula 1 apart from the fact that the tyres have become the most important factor and the teams that have better understanding of them, end up taking more advantage over their rivals.
However, the entire situation is about to change, as soon as all of the teams shift to the V6 turbo charged engines for the next season. There will be a lot of reliability problems for everyone and consistency will be the most important factor.
Although this will be bad news for some of the outfits, others will see this as an opportunity if making an impression in the championship. Even the smaller teams like Marussia and Caterham will have a strong chance of scoring their first ever points in
the sport, if they fail to do so during the ongoing season.
Other than the team bosses, some drivers have also predicted numerous retirements during the 2014 Formula 1 season. One of those drivers was the outgoing Mark Webber, who will not be a part of the sport next year. He claimed earlier in the season that the
new engine changes would bring plenty of reliable issues for everyone.
