Ross Brawn believes Mercedes are surely amongst strong title contenders – Formula 1 news
Mercedes team principal, Ross Brawn has said that they are surely in this year’s title chase and are standing amongst the strongest contenders at the moment.
Brawn said that Red Bull Racing showed magnificent pace during the middle of the preceding season after which they successfully claimed their third consecutive constructors’ title and expressed that after seeing the performance of his drivers, Lewis Hamilton
and Nico Rosberg, he can say that they are definitely one of the toughest contenders in this year’s championship.
“Red Bull last year had a great middle of the season. We’ve got two drivers on top form, the team is really gelling now, and why not? We’re certainly going to try,” Brawn said.
Hamilton performed amazingly well in the qualifying of the British Grand Prix and successfully managed to secure the pole position. However, on the race day, his performance was badly affected by his rear left tyre explosion because of which he could only
secure fourth place finish. In contrast, Rosberg showed remarkable pace and scored his second victory of the season after setting off from second grid position.
The 58-year-old has admired the performance of both their drivers. Although, he said that he was a little bit concerned about the 2008 world champion due to the tyre issue. Nevertheless, he stated that they are quite contented with their competitive result
in the last race. In addition, he said that they are positively looking forward to perform well in the season ahead and are targeting to compete well with their rivals for the title.
“Getting back to racing was just great, and getting back to racing with the result we had is obviously very special. It was partly frustrating because Lewis had a great weekend, just one event took it away from him, but that can happen. We’re greatly encouraged
for the rest of the season,” he said.
“It would have been close. I think we were competitive,” he added.
Presently, the Brackley based squad are standing at second place in the constructors’ championship with 171 points. Moreover, they are ahead of Ferrari and behind Red Bull. Let’s see how they perform in the German GP this weekend.
