Ross Brawn declares Paddy Lowe’s early arrival a ‘bonus’ – Formula 1 news
Mercedes boss Ross Brawn has declared the early arrival of Paddy Lowe as a ‘bonus’ for the team.
The latter of the two had been working with McLaren for the past many years, but decided to quit his job in order to shift to Mercedes. Although he was working as a technical director with his former outfit, his role with the new team is still undecided.
Despite that, Brawn believes that his squad will gain a lot from the British engineer.
He added, “It is a bonus because this is a particularly challenging time with the 2014 car. We want to get started, believe it or not, on the 2015 car and it is a period when all our resources have been stretched to the limit.”
Since Lowe was not expected to arrive at Mercedes before the end of the 2013 Formula 1 season, the team has failed to decide a particular role for him. There are a lot of rumours associated with this move, but none of them have yet been confirmed.
According to Brawn, “I would not say we have fine-tuned his insertion into the group yet. Once he has joined, that will be a discussion between myself, [technical director] Bob [Bell] and Paddy to find the best way of using him immediately and the best way
of using him in the long-term.”
The Brackley-based squad has really struggled with tyre wear since their arrival in the sport in 2010. They have been in positions from where their drivers could have challenged for victories, but the situation has never been easy during race days.
Unlike all of the other rival teams, Mercedes have failed to come on top of their degradation problem and Lowe might bring in a solid solution this year. Although he will take time to understand the characteristics of the new machinery, he will definitely
bring an improvement in the coming years.
At the moment, the German giants are fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, marginally behind Lotus. They have been doing a brilliant job in qualifying, but need to work hard on race pace. With Nico Rosberg winning in Monaco, there seems to be some hope
for the team, but the real picture will be clear in the upcoming Canadian GP.
