Ross Brawn defends Michael Schumacher and explains his absence from Spanish GP – Formula 1 news
Ross Brawn explains that his illness was the reason he had to miss out on the Spanish Grand Prix.
Mercedes CEO Nick Fry was more visible in Barcelona as Brawn stayed overnight at a hospital. Brawn is returning for the Monaco Grand Prix. He explained what exactly happened that led to his absence.
“On the Tuesday before Barcelona I felt unwell so I went to the doctor and then stayed a night in hospital for some tests,” Brawn told Bild. “When I got home, I decided on the advice of doctors to give myself a weekend off, to be sure that I am fit for Monaco.”
Upon Brawn’s return, he shed some light on the comments made by Fry earlier about Michael Schumacher where he stated that he will not be surprised if Schumacher decided to end his career at the end of the season.
Brawn defended Schumacher and said that the team has let him down. He further added that a lot has been written and said about Schumacher’s performance and his future but everyone should also realise that the team needs to do better on the whole. Schumacher’s
real quality was on display in the first race and that gives me the confidence to believe that he will be on the podium this year.
“When the time comes, we will sit down together and talk about the future. I'm sure it will become clear very quickly in what direction we will go,” he added.
Schumacher so far in the season has only been able to finish two races out of the five. He did not finish the other three races the recent being the Spanish GP where he collided with Bruno Senna’s car. Schumacher was visibly angry at the crash and blamed
Senna over the incident. The stewards saw it differently and penalised Schumacher for a five-place grid penalty.
It will be imperative for Schumacher to score some vital points at Monaco in order to remain contention for at least the top five places. Statistically it is still very much possible to win the championship for here on, but the competitiveness it so fierce
that it is an unlikely scenario, nonetheless Monaco is going to be an important race.
