Ross Brawn expecting struggle for Mercedes beyond Monaco - Formula 1 news
Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn believes that his team might struggle with tyre wear after the Monaco GP, which is scheduled to take place Sunday, May 26, 2013.
Although the German outfit has been struggling with its tyre situation since the start of the 2013 season, the race in Monte Carlo will provide them an opportunity to deliver a solid result overall.
The main reason for it is that tyre management will not be an issue in the upcoming race. Qualifying will be the most important factor and Mercedes have shown their dominance over a single lap run until now. Both their drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg
have been setting pole for the past three races, which will give them plenty of hope.
However, Brawn has said that no major upgrades will be brought in the next race. He claimed, “Monaco is not usually a race to which teams bring many updates because the track conditions change so much across the weekend. The priority is always to get the
drivers comfortable with the unique challenge the circuit presents and to give them a set-up they feel confident pushing to the limit.”
He added, “Both Nico and Lewis have historically been incredibly competitive in Monaco and this weekend will certainly allow their talent to shine.”
Even if Mercedes manage to deliver a strong result in the upcoming event, they will need to focus hard on development afterwards. Top teams like Red Bull, Lotus and Ferrari have understood the tyres better, thus they have been fighting for victories with
consistency regardless of the track conditions and characteristics.
At the moment, Lotus seem to be the team to beat in terms of race pace. Even on a track like Spain, where most of the teams had to go for a four stop strategy, Lotus managed to do one stop less, which was quite an amazing achievement.
Due to this, Kimi Raikkonen has managed to fight for victories with consistency. Although his strategy is less attacking compared to the rival teams, yet he gets the results, which will help him stay in contention for the Drivers’ Championship throughout
the season.
