Ross Brawn wants Michael Schumacher to stay – Formula 1 news
Mercedes AMG Petronas team principal, Ross Brawn wants Michael Schumacher to extend his contract with the team after the upcoming 2012 Formula 1 season would be over.
Seven time world championship, Schumacher announced his retirement in 2006 and made his comeback in F1 couple of years back. The veteran German driver struggled during the first season after his return and was completely outperformed by his teammate, Nico
Rosberg.
Nevertheless, in 2011, Schumacher made an impressive improvement in his performance and his best result during the season was the fourth position at Canadian Grand Prix whereas his teammate, Rosberg could only manage to secure fifth position at Chinese and
Turkish Grands Prix in his top results.
Moreover, after the last two years of Schumacher’s return there had been many speculations that he might leave F1 after his contract would end with Mercedes. Conversely, Brawn considered that if Schumacher choose to continue, it would give an indication
that the team and the record world champion had achieved success.
In addition, Brawn said that everything would come into sight naturally as no decision had been fixed regarding the season ahead. Nonetheless, he expressed that at some point in the approaching season they would have to make the decision concerning whether
to continue or to do otherwise.
“It's completely open as to how things will go this season,” said Brawn. “No decision has been reached and there's no timetable. That is something that will naturally evolve and is the nature of these things. But at some point in the season we will all have
to conclude we carry on or we do something else.”
He also said that they were quite comfortable at present and would like to see how things show up as the season progress.
Furthermore, he said that if Michael would stay at Mercedes, it would imply that they were making progress.
“At the moment it's very relaxed, very natural. We'll do the first third or half of the season and see how things develop. But I'm very keen to see Michael continue because that means we're succeeding in what we're trying to do,” said Brawn.
