Ross Davenport aims to end his swimming career on a high
One of Great Britian's major freestyle swimmers, Ross Davenport has implied that his retirement time might be near and before he hangs his swimming suit, the swimmer wants to conquer the podium at some major world, one last
time.
Davenport stressed that he will not rush the decision to retire from swimming and accepts that nothing he ever does in the future would come close to his competitive swimming life. The freestyle swimmer, who qualified
for the 2011 Shanghai World Championships in March, just turned 27 on Monday, May 23, 2011.
Davenport defeated the 2010 Commonwealth Games 200m freestyle Champion, Robert Renwick to secure his Shanghai spot and his trip to Shanghai will be his third in last two years. Previously, the British swimmer earned a silver medal
at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 4*200m freestyle relay and another silver at the 2006 European Long Course Championships. In addition, Ross won the gold medal in the 200m freestyle at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
"I think, more than likely, this will be my last World Championships, if not my last, hopefully, my second last. There aren't many more years left, I think. I have kind of got it in the back of my mind that maybe next year
will be my last year but if things are going well and I am still swimming well and enjoying it, then there is no reason to stop," said Davenport.
Davenport pointed towards his ultimate aim, qualifying for the 2012 London Olympic Games and expressed that this might be his last Olympics. The British swimmer was training in Cyprus at the British Swimming training camp.
This is the same place where he trained for his first Olympic Games, the 2004 Athens Olympics.
While talking about his Shanghai qualification, Davenport said, "You think about competitions weeks in advance and it is a nice situation to be in, having qualified, because that means the pressure is off me."
The 27-year-old will also compete at the upcoming British Nationals, which will act as a second trial for their national swimmers to compete at the Shanghai Championships. Davenport has firm belief that his performances in
the word titles will do his country proud.
