Ross Dennis believes victory at Italian Grand Prix adds to their negotiating power – Formula 1 news
Chairman of McLaren Ross Dennis believes that the win of Lewis Hamilton at the Italian Grand Prix gives them a better negotiating position.
Dennis told that the duties of Martin Whitmarsh, team principal of McLaren, include achieving what their team has planned and his efforts cannot be underestimated. The win of Lewis Hamilton proves the strength of their McLaren and Whitmarsh will be in a
better position while he is dealing with the shareholders and the board. Besides, he said that their performance has proven that a driver can win a race with McLaren.
“First of all, the shareholders have a position, then the board has a position and then Martin has to handle what that position is,” Dennis said. “It would be totally inappropriate for me to say anything that would undermine Martin's position. It's his job
to get to where we want to get to, and I'm sure he'll have a better position now having demonstrated again that we have a very strong car. If Lewis is absolutely committed to winning then he can win in a McLaren.”
Talking about the desire of Hamilton to keep original trophies, Dennis said that their first priority is to win the race. McLaren can discuss other matters after the race. He further added that the team can compromise if it is necessary.
Furthermore, the chairman said that currently they have two British drivers but it is not an obligation for any driver to be in the team. He added that they are only looking for good results over the circuit and he is glad that both of their drivers are
veteran.
Hamilton won the Italian GP convincingly by starting at the pole position. The runner up, Sergio Perez of Sauber completed the race 4.3 seconds behind him. The other driver of McLaren, Jenson Button also exhibited impressive performance with his MP4-27,
however he retired due to a problem with his fuel system in the 32nd lap of the race. Button had started the race placed second on the grid.
