Ross Detwiler loses job in rotation and goes to bullpen as Chien-Ming Wang returns - MLB Update
Ross Detwiler has been sent to the bullpen as starter Chien-Ming Wang is available for the Washington Nationals. At the time of his injury, the Nationals had to call up Detwiler for filling spot in rotation. Replacing quality starter like Wang had demanded
top-notch performance from him in the season.
As he did fantastic job on number of occasions, the Nationals did not miss Wang as much.
However, now as Wang was ready, the Nationals had to vacate the spot in the rotation. That came at the exclusion of Detwiler. The fact Wang boasts an enviable career win-loss record and has the potential to throw higher number of innings on the mound, the
decision is purely based on rationality.
Detwiler has accepted the decision graciously and is looking forward to perform a role as reliever. Given a shaky bullpen with the Nationals, his quality throws down in the innings can help the club in protecting lead.
Off-course, he is going to make due adjustments, in line with the requirements of being a reliever.
At the beginning of the season, Detwiler brought number of wins and earned accreditation of the big-wigs. At some point in time, his performance buried the discussion about Wang’s come back and gave way to suggestions that the Nationals will be better off
retaining him as starter.
However, his last start was poor and unfortunately for him, it came at a time when Wang was finishing rehab games at Minor League facilities. That led the management to embrace Wang right away and thrust him into the bullpen.
“I didn’t think the last start was as bad as it looked,” Detwiler said. “I was just missing here and there by an inch. I thought that was an easier fix than anything else. I’m really looking forward to getting back out there and throwing strikes and not
falling behind every hitter.”
Detwiler did not hesitate in acknowledging Wang as a better option for the club.
“I mean, I’d rather be starting,” Detwiler said. “But we’ve got a guy that year-in, year-out is just winning games. I wasn’t getting the job done at the time, so it’s still a chance to put on a big league uniform everyday.”
Using his experience as starter, Detwiler can lift the weakened bullpen with the Nationals and still can become an important link in their victories.
