Ross Detwiler takes over Chien-Ming Wang’s spot on starting rotation as his sinkers flop-MLB Update
Finally the decision has been taken by the Washington Nationals about the starting pitcher Chien-Ming Wang. Ross Detwiler who was demoted to bullpen on his return to open a space for him back in the starting rotation.
Wang missed large part of the season due to strained hamstring and therefore against the plans, Detwiler had the fortune to be included as fifth starter for the club.
The report came as a surprise, against the backdrop of confidence the Nationals manager Davey Johnson had talked of, despite witnessing series of rough-ups from him. Johnson had reiterated that he does not subscribe to the idea of bringing sweeping changes
in the face of slight decline.
Rationally speaking, Johnson allowed Wang maximum possible time to fix his throws, but repetition of the same mistake was certainly to compel the management for removal.
Wang failed to overcome the problem with his sinkers, a pitch he has used over the years to attain the status of being a quality starting pitcher. He struggled with his mechanics. Lack of chemistry between body and the arms led his throws reaching the unintended
place on the strike-zone and thus causing failure of sinkers.
Couple of Major League seasons which saw him bringing slew of victories and earning an impressive win-loss record can be sighted as a reason why the Nationals had included him in the rotation as soon as he came back from injury.
Not taking his ouster from the spot to mind, Wang is searching for the right sinkers he is known for, at the moment. Trying to restore the level he boasts as a pitcher, he is working with pitching coach Steve McCatty on regular basis.
Rigorous training he is going through gives one an impression that he is h**l-bent to prove a point by reclaiming the spot on rotation and putting up solid performances.
“No matter what my spot is with the team, I think the only thing I need to do is get my sinker back,” Wang said. “Hopefully, I can get back to the rotation. But I just want to keep doing my job, get my sinker back.”
He will love to impress the management by working out issues with his pitches and earn the call again for doing the starting job for the club.
