Ross Drummond and Terry Price lead the Pon Senior Open
Ross Drummond and Terry Price stormed to the top of the leaderboard after day one of the Pon Senior Open, thanks to the rounds of 67, which left them a shot clear of Bernhard Langer.
Both the players started off their rounds early in the morning, when the course conditions were favourable for the players.
Price recorded a total of six birdies against a lone bogey and joined Drummond on the top, whose scorecard also showed the same number of red and blue dots.
The Australian played brilliantly throughout the day and created a number of birdie chances. He himself admitted that he failed to make use of all of them. Otherwise, he could have managed to take a commanding sole lead early in the tournament.
Right from the start of the 2012 European Seniors Tour season, he has been performing consistently. However, he is still in search of a low round that can lead him to a victory, this year.
“That round was very close to being the one I need to make me feel really good about my game again,” Price said.
“I played pretty well and the conditions were pretty tough out there at times, but I left a few shots out there so it wasn’t quite the round I need to get my confidence really back up to where I need it”.
He admitted that he failed to put together all the rounds in each of tournaments that he played. As a result, he always had to settle for average finishes in the end.
Last week, he recorded a 68 in the final round of the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters and took the 22nd spot on the leaderboard.
This week, he wants to keep the momentum going into each of the three rounds and take his first tour title home.
“I played nicely in the final round at Woburn last week and then I have managed to come here and continue that a little bit, so maybe this can be the week where I finally crack it”.
After turning professional in 1978, he recorded a total of 11 victories, eight of which came at the PGA Tour of Australasia.
The Holden New Zealand Open in 2004 was the last of the 11 professional victories of his career. Therefore, he now has a good chance of ending the eight-year title drought.
