Ross Fisher shares the lead after round one of the Portugal Masters
Ross Fisher fired a six-under par 65 in the opening round of the Portugal Masters, to take the share of the lead at the Oceânico Victoria Golf Course, on Thursday, October 11, 2012.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he stated that a victory this week will act like a foundation stone for his run to make it to the European Ryder Cup team once again.
Two years ago, he represented the European continent at The Celtic Manor Resort and contributed towards the victory of his team against the US counterparts.
This year, he did play some good golf in different parts of the world. However, he was not lucky enough to book a berth for the Medinah Country Club.
“I watched a fair bit of it [The Ryder Cup in Chicago]. I was tuning in watching and cheering on the boys - I actually felt more nervous sitting on the sofa than I did at Celtic Manor, it was kind of weird,” he said.
He added, “If that doesn't inspire me and all of these other guys to get in The Ryder Cup, then you shouldn't be playing the game of golf”.
“That was just awesome; I've experienced it in Wales and it's something that I think - Rory said it once - you've played in one, you never want to miss another one,” he concluded.
Fisher got off to brilliant start on the back nine of the course and birdied three of the first six holes that he played. He then bogeyed the 16th hole for the only blemish on his scorecard.
The drop shot did not shatter his confidence and he continued playing a good game on the course.
On his back nine, course’s front nine, he recorded birdies on four of the first five holes and surged to the top of the leaderboard.
Stephen Gallacher was the other player who recorded a six-under par 65 to share the first position. However, he played a flawless round, recording six birdies without conceding a single bogey.
Both the players now hold a one-stroke lead over George Murray, who posted six birdies against a lone bogey for a five-under par 66.
