Ross Ford pays tribute to defence – Rugby News Update
Ross Ford, the 28-year-old Scotland Hooker and captain of the national team is over the moon after winning the Test match against Australia at Newcastle, on Tuesday June 5.
Scotland is currently on tour of the southern hemisphere, and having played the Wallabies, they take on Fiji for a Test on June 16 before completing their tour with a game against Samoa in Apia on June 23. With the victory against Australia, they will take
confidence into the rest of the tour.
Andy Robinson, the head coach of Scotland, was under pressure to deliver the results before the tour, as his team had not won a game in 7 matches. Their only victory was against Georgia at the 2011 World Cup, and lost all five matches at the 2012 Six Nations.
No one was expecting to give Scotland any chance of defeating the mighty Wallabies, especially on their home soil.
Ford played an important role in the Scotland victory, as he was part of the scrum that won a penalty, which Greig Laidlaw duly converted in the dying seconds of the game, to give his country an unlikely victory.
"The boys are over the moon and they put in a big shift in defence," Ford told
Fox Sports. "The conditions weren't good for running rugby, but the boys dug in well in defence, put their bodies on the line and scrapped for a win there. The weather evened things out a little bit and credit to the Aussies they really tested us in
defence. They had some big ball carriers, but our boys stuck in there and stuck to the task."
Ford and his teammates were under immense pressure during the second half when Australia was trying to push the initiative. They were cramped on their tryline trying to keep the Wallabies at bay, and luck would favour them, as Mike Harris missed a penalty
kick that would have given Australia the lead.
However, Ford is relishing the victory and he believes that is a massive achievement for the team to win on Wallabies soil. This victory will give them immense confidence ahead of the challenges that await the team in Fiji and Samoa, while taking pressure
of Robinson.
