Ross Gload sparks as Philadelphia Phillies defeat Atlanta Braves 3-2 - MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ pinch hitter, Ross Gload had a remarkable day with the bat as he hit a decisive RBI and went 1-for-1 with an average of .244 in the Phillies’ 3-2 victory against the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia on September 7.
The two teams were unable to display their batting tricks during the first inning and the score-board remained empty. In the first inning, Martin Prado was saved to reach at first base on the error of Phillies’ short-stop Michael Martinez but got out on
second base when Chipper Jones hit a grounder into double play, pitcher to short-top position and short-stop to first base.
Similarly, Phillies’ centre-fielder Shane Victorino struck-out, Placido Polanco ground out and Chase Utley fouled out without contributing any run at the bottom of first inning. But the Phillies got off the mark during second inning and took a 1-0 lead when
Raul Ibanez hit a solo homer towards right-field.
The pitchers were dominated over the batters from the third to fifth inning and did not give away runs. Jason Heyward walked during fifth inning but got out to second base when Brandon Beachy hit a grounder into fielders’ choice to short-stop position. At
right-field, Alex Gonzalez flied out and at first base, Eric Hinske ground out without adding any run for the Braves.
In the sixth inning, Braves’ centre-fielder Michael Bourn scored one run to tie the game 1-1 when Jones drove a single-run shot to centre-field. Braves went ahead 2-1 during seventh inning when Freddie Freeman singled off centre-field and Heyward posted
a single run. Phillies’ batters kept themselves alive and levelled the game 2-2 at the bottom of the eighth inning.
Phillies’ starter, Roy Oswalt pitched economically as he gave up just two runs, four hits, four walks and two earned runs with an ERA of 3.72. In his seven innings pitched, he had seven strike-outs.
John Mayberry Jr. scored one run when Polanco hit a single-run drive to right-field. In the ninth inning, Phillies got a 3-2 lead when Ibanez scored the leading run on the single-run shot of Gload towards right-field. Carlos Ruiz occupied second base to
end the ninth inning.
With this thrilling encounter, Phillies swept the Braves 3-0 in the three-game series at Philadelphia.
