Ross McGowan contends strongly at the European Tour’s Qualifying School
Ross McGowan carded a four-under par 66 on Tuesday, to take the share of the 47th position, entering the last two rounds of the Final Qualifying Stage of the European Tour’s Qualifying School.
Three years ago, the Englishman earned a two-year exemption on the European Tour by winning the Madrid Masters.
He then struggled with injuries and his form over the last two years. Therefore, he failed to retain his card by finishing outside the top-120 in the 2012 Race to Dubai.
As a result, he had to move to Spain, in a bid to participate in the qualifying school. So far, he appears to move on the right track, especially after making a strong comeback in the third and the fourth round.
The 30-year-old marked a disappointing start to his campaign at the PGA Catalunya Resort’s Stadium Course, by carding a five-over par 77 in the first round.
He then recorded with a one-over par 71 at the Tour course on day two, to enter the third round with a six-over par overall score.
Thereafter, he made a strong charge on the leaderboard after posting rounds of two-under par and four-under par, to make the cut by two strokes.
He now plans to keep the momentum going into the last two rounds, in order to secure his place among the top-25 players on the leaderboard.
According to the European Tour’s qualifying policy, the top-25 players at the end of the week will earn their way into the 2013 European Tour season.
“I guess experience has a little part to play and I’ll be expecting to make my way up the leaderboard and get into that top 25 come the end,” he said.
He continued, “It is hard because especially yesterday when we are on the harder course, the leaders are on the easier course... When it’s two courses like it is this week it’s tricky because you don’t really know where you are in the field”.
He added, “After today it’s a level playing for the weekend and miracles do happen so I’ll just go out there feeling positive and we’ll see what happens”.
