Ross Pearson wins bout at UFC 141 against Junior Assuncao – Recap
The Brazilian mixed martial art (MMA) fighter Junior Assuncao went into UFC 141 to prove his worth but the British MMA fighter Ross Pearson remained on top and won the featherweight bout through a unanimous decision 30-27, 29-28, 29-28.
The event was produced by Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and was held on December 30, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
With the first round in progress, neither of the two fighters look eager to start the fight. They circle the ring and try understanding their opponent’s mind. As both fighters step closer to get a hold of each other it is Assuncao who moves further for the
attack. Surprisingly for Pearson, the attack is not a strike or a punch but a takedown attempt as the Brazilian aims at his opponent’s feet. This was an unusual strategy which Assuncao had used.
Pearson was fresh and struggled to his feet in no time. The moment he got up, he went for a punch combo which was the first major strike in the fight. The first wave of attack from the British fighter left his opponent injured as some dark spots become evident
around Assuncao’s eyes. This was something the Brazilian was not expecting, especially in the opening round of the fight.
As the first round made its way, spectators were eager to see Assuncao do some damage but he was on the defensive position. This was a rare sight to witness as the Brazilian was not willing to engage in a fight while his opponent was on a vertical base. This
was the reason he was continuously attempting to take down Pearson so he could be more vulnerable. The Brazilian is not in his fighting mood as it is evident from the stance he has taken.
In the opening round, he rarely used any kicks or punches but his complete attention was in taking down Pearson. Assuncao could barely manage to strike with some kicks but this was not effective. Pearson was also looking for an opening but the Brazilian
kept moving around, he looked afraid from Pearson. The first round ended with both fighters still in good shape.
Round two of the fight was another sight when Assuncao kept his strategy to takedown Pearson. The British kept his nerves and created a wide gap between his opponent so he could find a chance to strike him down. The actual fight did not begin since the first
round as both fighters were either chasing each other or going for takedowns.
The first blow came from Pearson who gave a powerful head kick. This was a move Pearson was looking to apply for a long time and it was effective indeed. Assuncao could not remain an upright position as he went down on the mat. The Brazilian made a great
comeback and showed his fighting spirit for the first time in the fight. His body shots and strikes compelled Pearson to falter back but he was saved by the second round bell.
The third round was when both fighters were throwing blood from their mouth and noses as their strikes continued. The final round belonged to Pearson who maintained his pressure over Assuncao. The two fighters kept exchanging blows as Assuncao became breathless
but was once again saved by the bell. Pearson was given the win by a unanimous decision 30-27, 29-28, 29-28.
