If you are planning on applying for a short-term (summer program) with Rotary, does your family necessarily have to be a host family.. or can it just be a one-way exchange?

  1. I am an outbound to Brazil for the 2008-09 school year. To answer your question, Rotary encourages your family to host a exchange student that is in your district for a period of about 3 months. It is not mandatory, but it is encouraged.

A bonus of your family hosting a student is that they can see (in a way) what you have to go through on your exchange.

My family is most likely hosting a student the school year after I come home so that I can help drive them around and stuff, but we will still be hosting someone.

I recommend that your family thinks about hosting a student. I know that it would be a great experience for them. But if they chose not to that is ok too. Where do you want to go? Email me. I would love to talk to you!

  2. With the program below you dont need to host another student in your own home. That could be a bit touchy because if you hosted there is no guarantee that you will get along with the student you brought in your home, however when you participate in a program like the one mentioned here, in case you dont get along with the host family assigned to you, you just need to say it and you will be moved into another one.

Spain is a wonderful choice and the program www.beautifulspain.com, one of the best if not the best of the programs offered abroad world wide. Location is a safe and most amazingly beautiful beach resort in Northern Spain.

Host families are extremely well screened and very loving. This program gets returnees year after year, so great it is.

Cost is really reasonable considering everything included (as long as you sign up with this program through their web site as there are organizations that sell the same program for much more so high quality it is).

Some of the activities and excursions it offers besides Spanish, cooking and dancing classes are: Guggenheim Museum, paella dinner, bullfight, fireworks on the beach, city tour, medieval towns, fishing villages, many beach days, Aquarium, tall ship vessel excursion, Roman village hiking trip, canoening down the river, shopping, and much more.

It offers you the possibility of enrolling with a friend with whom to share same host family home, or for you to stay alone at host family. Many host families count on children of similar age to participating students.
