Rotation question?????

I coached volleyball for 10 seasons and saw something this weekend that has me confused.

Player B goes in for Player A in position 2. Rotate, Player B serves and Player C comes in back row after the serve (not a libero). That I realize is all fine, but how does Player A come in for Player C in postion 5??? I thought you could only sub player or position. I'm sure rules have changed in the 3 years I've been out, but I didn't get a chance to talk to the coach after the game. Just curious. THANK YOU!

  1. It works by the new rule if player B is a libero (the libero can serve these days).

Player C is a regular sub for player A, but not good at serving. It would cost them a sub, but everything is legal.

Player B comes out of the play and gets ready to go in for another back row player after sitting for one rally.

  2. It is quite legal. I don't think that I would do it though. Not with the refs that we have. They make up the rules as they go along. My new coach on the other hand, would probably try it just to tick off the refs. :)

  3. i'm not sure it most be a new rule that came in last year or this year b/c when i played 2 years ago it wasnt like that

that confusing y would they do that??? it sounds like something my schools stupid volleyball coach would try to pull off since she has her 3 favorite players..

  4. This is not a new rule.  This is legal in the US at all levels.  Junior high, high school, college and club are allowed to do these substitutions.  The players are locked in place in the serving order, not on positions on the court.  As long as players A, B and C do not play for any other players, they can keep substituting for each other.  In any order.  At any position on the court.  If you could look at the scoresheet, you will see that player A did start in position 2 on the scoresheet.  Players A, B, and C are locked into position 2 on the scoresheet.  I am not talking about the court position.

It sounds like A is a front row player, B is a server, and C is a Defensive Specialist.  The team must have other players that need to be replaced by the Libero.

The international rules (FIVB) do not allow that substitution.  They only allow 2 players to play in one position and once the starter re-enters the game, no more substitutions will be allowed at that position.  So player A starts, player B comes in and then player A comes back and has to finish that game (or set as it is called in USAV or club.)

If I have made this more confusing, please let me know.  You can email me if you want more clarifications.

  5. the only way i can happen is if player C was a libero otherwise, it is disallowed. Maybe the refs and scorekeepers didnt pay attention or were not certified to do it

  6. idk. im as clueless as u are. i have never seen that since ive been playing. i didnt know that 1 player could play 2 positions in one game?
