  1. Bla bla has cleared up a lot of fables.

    Rotterdam and Amsterdam not only follow the same laws, they also have the same traditions and habits when it comes to smoking.

    The main difference between Rotterdam and Amsterdam is the age of the average building.

    The center of Amsterdam is still mostly as it has been for a long time, with buildings from the different centuries, (16th till 21st.)

    Rotterdam has been bombed flat in WWII, and is rebuild since, in the popular style or new fashion style of that moment.

    So, with very few exceptions, the buildings are from the 20th and 21th century.

    The kind of shops you find in both are comparable, but the atmosphere is rather different.

    I prefer Amsterdam, but I have to admit that shopping in Rotterdam is also fun.

    For museums, Amsterdam has more, but Rotterdam can have the one you are just looking for.

    Entertainment, again comparable but different.

    Both towns have a big student population, which shows in places to drink and have fun at night.

    Both have a lot in cultural entertainment like Opera and Dance. If you opt for that, look at the agenda for both and select the town with the better event.

    In any case, you can easily travel from one to the other, 24/7, with trains round the clock.

    It is only an hour by train, costing you less than 25 Euro for a day return, (which is also valid in the night following the day.)

  2. Amsterdam is cannibus capital of the world.weed its totally legal there you can smoke any place in Amsterdam.i know cause my brother visited before he went to college .i dkn about Rotterdam but Amsterdam is my kinda of city

  3. I'm going 2 Rotterdam on Tuesday and have been told it has cool shops, but Amsterdam is better. And no its not smoke free, weed is legal there.

  4. Rotterdam is the best of the 2........Amsterdam, forget it!!!

  5. well, Amsterdam is definitely not free of marijuana smoke.  Frankly, I have absolutely no idea what you mean by smoke free.

  6. Ok - dealing with the facts rather than the myths and stereotypes!

    Rotterdam and Amsterdam follow the same laws - namely those decided at national level by the government.  Amsterdam is not an entity by itself where it operates on different laws from the rest of the country (this is a common myth!).

    From 01/Jul the (tobacco) smoking ban (which was already in place for all places apart from catering establishments) was implemented for the remainder of public places.  Therefore it is now illegal to smoke tobacco in any public place (cafe's, bars, restaurants, coffeeshops etc), unless there is a specific seperate are (e.g. glass smoking room) where staff do not enter or work within.  Smoking of marijuana does not fall under this ban (unless of course it is mixed with tobacco)

    Another myth is that cannabis/weed/marijuana/whateveryouwantt... is "legal".  Actually it is not legal in Amsterdam or anywhere else in the Netherlands. Sales are 'tolerated' under certain conditions:

    - no more than five grams per person may be sold in any one transaction;

    - no hard drugs may be sold;

    - drugs may not be advertised;

    - the coffee shop must not cause any nuisance;

    - no drugs may be sold to persons under the age of 18, nor may minors be admitted on the premises.

    Hard drugs are absolutely not tolerated and are acted upon stringently. By tolerating marijuana, resources can be targeted to hard drugs.

    So hopefully this clears it up for you
