Question:

Round, red fungus growing on trees?

I discovered what appeared to be a fungus growing on many trees (sorry, don't remember the species) the other day. I'm positive that they weren't berries, because they were growing on both the trunks and directly on the leaves.

It appeared bright red, round, and bulbous, and was growing mainly on the primary veins of the leaves. Some were the size of a pea, some were the size of marbles. Some of the bulbs were clumped together to form long rows.

I have never seen anything like it, and I searched the internet for quite a while, but found nothing.

  1. Since you spotted it to be red, it can be an amanita mushroom, which are very poisonous.

  2. there is no way it would be A.muscaria. They do not grow on leaves for a start. A.musc are found growing from the ground around birch and a few other species of trees. Plus they have white spots that are left by the veil of the mushroom as it grows.

I'm not sure what they are, a pick would help. Might not even be a fungus, perhaps the cocoon of some form of insect (only an idea) but Definitely NOT amanita muscaria.
