Round 1 of ASP 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro continues to feature exquisite performances at Les Dunes
The thrilling surfing action continued at the secondary site of Les Dunes in Brétignolles-sur-Mer, France, as the remaining heats of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro went down on Thursday, April 19.
Guadeloupe’s Charles Martin, Reunion Island’s Frederic Robin and Morocco’s Yassine Ramdani emerged triumphant in their respective Round 1 (Round of 112) heats to advance through into Round 2 (Round of 96).
Italy’s Alessandro Piu, Venezuela’s Ronald Reyes, France’s Alexis Ortiz De Zara and his compatriot Charly Quivront successfully made the Round 2 cut as well.
The choppy conditions prevailing at the alternative event site was proving to be quite challenging for the competition field that comprised of both local as well as international surfers. With coveted ASP rating points and attractive prize money on offer,
the surfers were determined to put on good performances to ensure their survival in the event.
Pitted against Piu and Christine, Martin managed to emerge triumphant despite failing to look confident at any stage in the heat. The Guadeloupe-based surfer collected a couple of average wave scores to finish with a heat-total of 9.24 points, which remained
unbeaten until the end to seal the fate of the three-man battle in his favour.
Piu extended his life in the event by securing runner-up position through a two-wave total of 7.83 points. Christine was forced to make a premature exit from the vent after finishing in third place with a heat-total of 4.76 points.
Goncalves and Reyes joined the Round 2 line-up as well after the sixth heat failed to start due to the absence of the third competitor.
The seventh heat featured a one-sided contest as Robin came hard on his rival De Zara. The Reunion Island-based surfer put on an impressive show for the crowd, executing power turns and exhibiting his smooth style of surfing during the course of the heat.
Scoring a heat-total of 11.00 points, Robin got the better of De Zara, who was only able to get to a two-wave total of 4.97 points. Both the surfers managed to get into the second round though.
The eighth heat saw Ramdani walk away with top honours after finishing with a heat-total of 11.83 points. Quivront failed to pose a significant threat to his rival’s two-wave total, but still managed to remain alive in the contention for the event title
after finishing with a heat-total of 8.74 points. France’s Nathan Hele finished in third place with a heat-total of 7.07 points.
The surfing action shifted back to the primary site of La Sauzaie to start-off with the second round of the ASP 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro.
