Round 1 of Quiksilver Saquarema Prime completes in extreme conditions – Surfing news
The opening round (Round of 96) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 2013 Quiksilver Saquarema Prime completed in extreme conditions at Itauna beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Thursday, May 23, 2013.
The heavy six-to-eight foot waves breaking at the main event site on the latest day of the competition presented the surfers with a daunting task of ensuring their survival in the contention for the coveted ASP Prime ranking points, as well as a share of
the hefty prize purse on offer at the latest ASP Prime event of the season.
The proceedings on day two of the competition kicked-off with the 17th heat of Round 1, featuring South Africa’s Travis Logie, Brazil’s Peterson Crisanto and his fellow countrymen Heitor Alves and Simao Romao in a four-man battle for the Round 2 (Round of
48) spot.
The South African surfer managed to hold his own despite the tough surfing conditions and posted a couple of scores in the seven-point range to eventually finish with a decisive heat-total of 15.20 points.
Alves accompanied Romao to Round 2 after claiming second place with a heat-total of 14.10 points.
The 18th heat saw Brazil’s David do Carmo register a heat-total of 16.50 points, which included a 9.00 and 7.50-point ride, to finish on top of his fellow compatriot Willian Cardoso, America’s Chris Ward and his fellow compatriot Cory Lopez.
Lopez extended his life in the competition as well after claiming second place with the help of a heat-total of 14.54 points.
France’s Marc Lacomare walked away victorious from the 19th heat after posting a 9.50 and 7.00 on the scoreboard for a heat-total of 16.50 points.
Australian’s Matt Banting finished ahead of his compatriot Jay Thompson and South Africa’s Beyrick de Vries in second place by registering a heat-total of 14.77 points, thus accompanying Lacomare to Round 2.
The 20th heat saw France’s Joan Duru and Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz finishing ahead of France’s Maxime Huscenot and America’s Eric Geiselman in first and second place respectively to advance through into the next round.
Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas and America’s Damien Hobgood secured their place in Round 2 after finishing ahead of France’s Vincent Duvignac and Hawaii Kai Barger in the 21st heat.
America’s Patrick Gudauskas and Nathan Yeomans made their way into the second round of the competition after finishing on top of Australia’s Adam Melling and Hawaii’s Gavin Gillette in the 22nd heat.
The 23rd heat concluded in favour of Hawaii’s Mason Ho, who finished with a heat-total of 12.74 points to advance to the next round, whereas Basque Country’s Aritz Aranburu managed to extend his life in the competition by securing second place,
courtesy of the heat-total of 12.46 points.
The last-two spots available in Round 2 were secured by France’s Jeremy Flores and South Africa’s Dale Staples after they scored a heat-total of 16.30 and 14.47 points respectively to clinch the top-two positions, thus eliminating Australia’s Jack Freestone
and Brazil’s Yuri Sodre from the competition.
