Round 2 highlights of Honda Classic - Golf Update
The second round of the Honda Classic wrapped up on Friday with Kyle Stanley in the lead and Rory Sabatini in the chase. Here is a quick glance at the leader board.
The $5.7 million tournament kicked off on the Champion Course, which was rated the second most difficult course in United States by Golf Digest in 2010. Apart from the hard greens, wind played the villain’s role for the second consecutive day. Despite the
resistance, Stanley managed to earn six birdies against two bogeys and surged into the lead with an aggregate of six-under.
The American rookie was extremely happy with his accomplishment. He said, “I make well. I feel like I've been playing well all year but haven't quite put four good rounds together, but I'm getting better and that's the main thing.”
He was chased by a South African, Rory Sabatini. The five-time winner at Professional Golf Association tour recorded the lowest score of the course. The previous score was set by Luke Donald, who recently lifted the WGC-Accenture Match Play trophy. Sabatini
compiled 6-under-64 with the help of seven birdies.
Sabatini spoke with joy while addressing the press. He said, “After the way I struggled yesterday and just trying to get in at 1-over, I tell you what, I wasn't exactly looking forward to getting out there today.”
The third spot of the leader board was taken up by yet another South African, Charl Schwartzel. The winner of the European Tour’s season opener event carved four birdies against three bogeys and wrapped up the day with an aggregate of three-under-par.
Schwartzel was very happy with the success of his compatriot. He congratulated Sabatini and said, “You've played really good golf, especially in conditions like this.”
A four-way tie was seen for the fourth spot. Ricky Barnes (68), Jerry Kelly (67), Stuart Apple (70) and Tommy Gainey (67) compiled a score of 2-under in the 36-hole session.
Meanwhile, world-number one, Lee Westwood; Matt Kuchar and Y.E Yang shared eighth place after compiling 69, 70 and 71 respectively. Westwood improved immensely since the first round. He seems to have gotten a hold of the course and the conditions that are
prevalent on it.
According to most of the golfers, including Westwood, the weather was much better than Thursday’s session. At one point, Stanley commented that he could hear people talking on the second day, which was not the case on Thursday. It snowed, hailed, rained
and the wind kept on blowing throughout the day, which made it difficult to see and play.
Luke Donald pulled 72 per cent in Green Hits in Regulation, unlike the 33 percent in the first round, and managed to earn five birdies in the day. Despite that, he wrapped the round at 1-over-par. Donald was joined by Jeff Overton who similarly failed to
break the par, but managed to eagle the par-4 11th.
Graeme McDowell barely survived the cut after finishing inches away from the danger line. The Northern Irishman reeled a single birdie in the second round and lost it to a set of bogeys on the adjacent holes.
