Round 2 win over Travis Logie takes Brett Simpson into Round 3 of Volcom Fiji Pro
America’s Brett Simpson took an excellent come-from-behind victory over South Africa’s Travis Logie in the sixth heat of Volcom Fiji Pro’s Round 2 that went down at the primary event site of Cloudbreak in Tavarua, Fiji, on Monday, June 4.
With his success in Round 2, Simpson advanced through into the third round, while the fourth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour came to a premature end for Logie due to his second consecutive loss.
The clean four-to-six foot waves breaking at the primary event site on the second day of the competition promised plenty of intense action throughout the course of the day. The scoring opportunities were there, but the world’s best surfers were bound to
get tested for their perseverance due to the demanding surfing conditions.
Failing to get hold of a successful result in their respective Round 1 heats on Sunday, both Simpson and Logie found themselves pitted against each other in Round 2. Facing a do-or-die situation, they could not afford to settle for anything less than top
honours, as another loss meant elimination from the contention for the event title. With plenty of experience and huge array of skills at their disposal, neither of the two surfers was expected to go down without putting on a tough fight.
As the sixth heat of Round 2 kicked-off, Simpson got off to a promising start. He wasted very little time in getting an upper-hand in the heat by locking a relatively promising wave and utilised it to post a 5.67 on the score-board.
Logie got off to a slow start, but gradually built momentum. Almost halfway through the heat, he charged towards a rippable left-hander and utilised it to post a 5.27 on the score-board. Keeping the momentum going, he backed it up with a 6.93-point ride
to grab the lead with a heat-total of 12.20 points.
Simpson was trailing his South African rival with only a few minutes left in the heat. Rising up to the occasion in the final minutes of the heat, the American surfer collected a 6.73-point ride to move 0.20 points ahead of his rival, thus claiming the win
and advancing through into the next round.
