Round 3: Bo Van Pelt scores 69 to take the 21st spot in the Transitions Championship – Golf News
Richmond native Bo Van Pelt carded a two-under par 69 in the third round of the Transitions Championship to stand tied for the 21st place at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida.
The 36-year-old started off well with a birdie on the par-four second. He added two consecutive birdies to end the front nine followed by a bogey on the seventh.
Later in his round, he suffered two consecutive bogeys on the 16th and 17th hole to finish five shots off the lead set by Retief Goosen and Jim Furyk.
Yet, the score was good enough to improve his position in the tournament. When he entered the field on Saturday, he was placed at the 49th position.
Therefore, his name moved up by 28 positions on the leaderboard and reduced the distance from the leaders from nine to five strokes.
Van Pelt finished tied for eighth in the last three tournaments that he played, including the Cadillac Championship last week.
Therefore, he now aims to register a better finish in the Transitions Championship in order to get a boost to his confidence prior to the start of the Masters Tournament next month.
Last year, Van Pelt finished tied for eighth in the Masters. Moreover, his latest run of top-10 finishes makes him a good contender in the major event.
He currently ranks 25th in the Official World Golf Rankings and has confirmed to play the first major event of the year.
While entering the final round of the Transitions Championship, he must tweak his shots that force him to suffer bogeys in the first three rounds.
He must carefully analyse the mistakes he made in order to make another good finish of the 2012 season.
Meanwhile, Retief Goosen fired a six-under par third round score to finish on top of the leaderboard despite the injury he suffered during the second round on Friday.
Goosen carded a total of seven birdies against a lone bogey that came on the par four third. Overall, he looked smooth and played quality shots throughout the third round.
