Round 3 of Reef Hawaiian Pro sees Willian Cardoso and Alejo Muniz go through
Brazil’s Willian Cardoso and his fellow countryperson Alejo Muniz continued to make waves at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, first of three events on the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, earning top honours in their respective Round 3 (Round
of 64) heats that went down at the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii on Saturday, November 17, 2012.
Both Cardoso and Muniz advanced through into the fourth round (Round of 32) following their successful Round 3 heats.
Hawaii’s Dusty Payne and Kekoa Bacalso accompanied the victors into the next round as well after securing runner-up position in their respective heats.
The latest day of the competition turned out to be as exciting as ever, with the clean four-foot waves offering just enough for the talented surfer to cut loose a little and show that they are really made of.
There was plenty of motivation for them to push hard during their battles, as the event put a juicy prize of $250,000 on offer, along with coveted Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking points.
Pitted against Payne, Australia’s Adrian Buchan and Brazil’s Alex Ribeiro in the 11th heat, Cardoso was made to work hard for a couple of decent scores.
The sea refused to be generous, thus forcing the Brazilian surfer to really dig in to grab an opportunity and eventually reap a 5.67 and 5.07-point ride for a reward. The effort paid off, allowing him to finish with a winning heat-total of 10.74 points.
Payne finished behind him in second place at a heat-total of 10.43 points, which included a 6.20 and 4.23-point ride.
Buchan and Ribeiro finished with a two-wave total of 10.33 and 10.06 points respectively, thus having to settle for third and fourth place respectively and consequently getting elimination from the competition.
The 12th heat saw Muniz put on an impressive show to get the better of Bacalso, his compatriot Mason Ho and America’s Taylor Knox.
The Brazilian surfer scored a solid 8.50 off his first business-wave and added an additional 6.60 points to his account later in the heat, thus finishing with a decisive heat-total of 15.10 points.
Bacalso finished with a heat-total of 13.97 points, which included an 8.10 and 5.87-point ride.
Ho finished third with a heat-total of 13.76 points, while Knox had to settle for fourth place after registering a heat-total of 9.90 points, thus getting removed from the contention for the event title.
