Round-Up Day 1 - Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic
Charlie Wi shot a brilliant eight-under 64 on the first day at Palm Course Disney to lead the field of the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic by one shot.
Though it was not a flawless round but still stars were shining brightly for the South Korean. The Korean managed eight birdies, two bogeys and an eagle at the par-5 seventh.
Trailing Charlie is the duo of Camilo Villegas and Tommy Gainey.
Camilo and Gainey, both, had good rounds of seven-under 65. Ganiey is currently enjoying a good run prior to his maiden victory on the PGA Tour.
Wi is known to have decent starts and then to falter in the end. This year he led a few tournaments thrice in the initial stages. However, later on, his form slumped drastically.
For Wi, this tournament holds a key - the key to his participation in the Masters. If the Korean can win this, then there is huge possibility that he might sneak inside the top-thirty on the money tour list.
This would mean a tremendous deal to the world number 102. His breakthrough in the top-thirty will guarantee his place at the Masters next year and he is very well aware of it.
"Top 30 is definitely a goal," Wi said. "I'm not just showing up to play. You've got to have goals. I at least want to give myself a chance".
For Gainey, sneaking inside the top-thirty is a gone case, as he is way below in the money tour list. However, a victory to end with will definitely boost his confidence going into the next season.
"My goal is just to win, anyway," he said. "The way I'm playing right now, keep hitting the golf shots and keep hitting it in the fairways, and with the way I'm rolling this putter, it's going to be good by Sunday afternoon".
Not many big names are playing at the Palm Course. This raises the hopes for Wi to get his first win of the season.
Tiger Woods has played his full season and is taking some time off. Lefty, Phil Mickelson, is in Singapore. Only Davis Love III is the most high profile player in the field.
