Question:

Round-off Back Handspring?Help

K, so I have a perfect standing back handspring, round-off, and even standing back tuck on the floor. The problem is i've never been able to put together my round-off and back handspring. i'm trying out for competitive gymnastics in 2 weeks. I'm prepared to go to the gym as much as it takes. Any tips, suggestions or go through the steps to doing it would help so much.

  1. You answered a question of mine, and now I'll answer one of yours :]

Unfortunately, this is a necessity in gymnastics. Almost every tumble trick that you do on the floor requires this combination. Try, at first, doing a slow cartwheel instead of a round-off, without running. After the slow cartwheel, pull your arms back from the ground to behind your hips. Do this quickly. Jump into your back handspring and try to land as square as possible so that you don't create a bad habit. Try this over and over again until you feel comfortable with it. When you can do it well, try a round-off (without running) into your back handspring. Again, practice it a lot. You don't want to mess up at competitives. Keep practicing this until you feel comfortable with it. Then run a little and practice, and keep running a little more each time. You'll have it down in no time!

Tip: Can you do a back handspring into a back tuck? Although the round-off back handspring is way more important, this is more appealing and definately harder to do, which will get you more points. To impress the judges at the competitive try-outs, try mastering this trick :] Good luck!!

P.S. If your local gymnastics center has a trampoline (and I mean like a big one, not one that you can have outside in a backyard), try the round-off back handspring on there until you feel comfortable with it. Then try it on the ground.

    P.P.S. You may need a spot ;]

  2. Its weird you have a great standing tuck and back handspring but not a round off one, I thought that was the easiest

but anyway, just don't hesitate and just GO when you land your round off. (and make sure you land square!) if it feels better, get someone to spot you, although they might not even be doing anything.

    Good luck!

  3. i had that same problem just as soon as you land your round off absorb (when you absorb that should be your dip) and go for your backhandspring, if that doesnt work just do your roundoff take a quick pause and then do your backhandspring gradually make that pause shorter.

    Good luck!
