Round up: Chicago Cubs defeat New York Mets in three-game series, 2-1 – MLB Update
National League’s Chicago Cubs and New York Mets both had three exciting games in the current season. The Cubs clinched a three-game series 2-1 by defeating the Mets by a big margin in two games. All three games were played at Wrigley Field, Chicago.
The Mets performed well as they levelled the series 1-all but the Cubs snapped the last game with ease. The overview of these three games is follows.
Game 1: Chicago Cubs 11 - New York Mets 1 - May 24
The Cubs won the first game of series, 11-1. Starlin Castro and Ryan Dempster, both had a remarkable day as Castro went 3-for-5 including two RBIs and Dempster pitched seven solid innings.
Dempster permitted just one run on seven hits with one earned run. He struck-out five batters on his 98 pitches. Dempster expressed his winning excitement on behalf of his team and said, “It was just nice for us. We scored some runs, we took advantage of
a big error there, scored a bunch, like four runs after that. A good victory for us.”
On the other side, the Mets’ batters had a bad day as they scored just one run throughout the game. Ruben Tejada scored a single run for the Mets. Jonathon Niese was expensive as he threw five innings with an ERA of 4.33 and allowed six runs on seven hits
including two earned runs. He gave away only one walk on 85 pitches.
Game 2: New York Mets 7 - Chicago Cubs 4 - May 25
The Mets managed a 7-4 victory in the second game and tied the series 1-all. Dillon Gee and Carlos Beltran displayed an outstanding performance in the Mets victory. Beltran scored two runs including two RBIs hit to raise the momentum of his team.
Gee pitched six dominant innings with an ERA of 3.83 and allowed just four runs on four hits. The Mets’ Manager Terry Collins was satisfied with his performance and said, “It was probably difficult to grip the ball early, to get a good grip on it. One of
the things that is (Gee's) trademark is command. When his command is off, there's got to be something to it.”
The Cubs’ batters posted only four runs on the score-board.
Game 3: Chicago Cubs 9 - New York Mets - May 26
The Cubs were dominated in the last game and won 9-3. Carlos Zambrano pitched superbly as he gave away just two runs on six hits in six inning pitches. Tony Campana shined with his bat and added some valuable runs for his team.
The Cubs’ Manager Mike Quade praised Campana and said, “It's awfully fun to watch him run around out there. Not just because of his speed, but his enthusiasm and everything else.”
Jose Reyes, Jason Bay and Jason Pridie scored three runs combined for the Mets.
