Round up: Colorado Rockies brush aside Cleveland Indians 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Colorado Rockies and Cleveland Indians both had the best record in the current season and won their individual series but in this thrilling match-up, the Rockies defeated the Indians 2-1 in a three-game series at Progressive Field, Cleveland.
The Indians’ batters seemed powerless in the first two games but they lifted the potential of their team in the third match and avoided a clean sweep. All three games were close and exciting for the supporters. A brief overview of these games is follows.
Game 1: Colorado Rockies 8 – Cleveland Indians 7 – June 20
In the first game of the series, Jason Giambi outclassed the pitchers through his extraordinary performance and struck a three-run homer (431 feet) during the six-run fifth inning to give the Rockies an 8-7 win. The rest of the batters also contributed equally
for the Rockies.
Giambi said, “I was crawling out of my skin. By the third one I had calmed down a little. It was nice to contribute and help the ballclub win. I kind of bet the farm that he was going to throw me a fastball.”
Michael Brantley and Asdrubal Cabrera both struggled with the bat and did not add any runs on the score-board which resulted in the Indians’ loss.
Game 2: Colorado Rockies 4 – Cleveland Indians 3 – June 21
The Rockies clinched the series 2-0 after winning the second game with a margin of 4-3. Seth Smith was impressive with the bat as he hit two homers along with the contribution of his team-mates. Smith said, “I just tried to drown everything out and focus.
In the outfield, I wondered if I'd get hit by lightning. At bat, I just tried to put a good swing on a pitch.”
On the other side, the Indians’ starter, Mitch Talbot was little bit shaky with the ball as he threw just over four innings with an ERA of 4.91 and allowed three runs on eight hits including three earned runs. He struck-out two batters and permitted two
walks on 107 pitches.
Game 3: Cleveland Indians 4 – Colorado Rockies 3 – June 22
In the final game, the Indians’ batters put runs on the score-board and boosted up the confidence of their team with a convincing victory. Travis Hafner shined as he hit two RBIs and Ty Wigginton hit a home-run (401 feet) to give the Indians a 4-3 win.
Wigginton said, “We would have liked to have gotten a sweep. It didn't work out. I guess now we sleep this one off on the off-day and get ready to play in the Big Apple.”
Jason Hammel was expensive for the Rockies as pitched six innings with an ERA of 4.13 and gave up four runs on five hits including four earned runs.
