Round up: Florida Marlins earn their second sweep in 2011 – MLB Update
Game 1: Florida Marlins 5 – San Francisco Giants 1
The Marlins’ starter, Ricky Nolasco threw eight innings, struck-out five batters, walked two and gave just one run over seven hits to take his team to a 5-1 win over the San Francisco Giants in the first outing of the three-game series at the AT&T Park,
on May 24.
Ricky did not give any run in his first eight innings and by the time he reached his ninth inning the Marlins’ batters has posted five runs on the board. Gaby Sanchez scored an RBI triple in the third inning while Mike Stanton hammered a splendid 410-feet
one-run homer in the fourth and Chris Coghlan added fifth run with a line drive in the ninth inning.
The Giants’ starter Matt Cain yielded four of these five runs besides allowing three walks and striking-out five batters over six innings to bear his third loss of the season. Closer Guillermo Mota scattered the fifth run in the ninth after reliever Dan
Runzler threw a scoreless one inning.
Ricky gave a sacrifice fly to Miguel Tejada in the ninth inning that saved the Giants from a shut-out.
Game 2: Florida Marlins 7 – San Francisco Giants 6
Marlins romped to a 7-6 win against the Giants in the second game to take a 2-0 lead in the three-game series on May 25.
Gaby Sanchez and Mike Stanton again scored an RBI single to take the club into a 2-0 lead in the first inning. However, this time the Giants were in the mood to show the National League they are still the World Series defending champions.
Andres Torres and Aubrey Huff scored an RBI each in the third inning to tie the game but the Marlins’ Hanley Ramirez again took his team back into leading position with an RBI single in the fifth inning. Stanton scored another RBI, this time for three runs
in the ninth inning to cement the Marlins second straight win.
However, Pat Burrell and Aubrey Huff each scored an RBI double to force the game into extra innings with six-all on board. The game was decided in the top of the twelfth inning when Emilio Bonifacio hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Scott Cousins to Guillermo
Mota.
On his way to score a run, Cousins bumped with the Giants’ catcher Buster Posey injuring his left leg.
Game 3: Florida Marlins 1 – San Francisco Giants 0
Anibal Sanchez had an outstanding day to take his club into a 1-0 win over the San Francisco Giants, at AT&T Park on Thursday night, May 26 to clinch a series sweep.
Sanchez struck-out eight batters over his nine innings spell while allowing just five no-score hits and two walks to achieve his fourth win in his tenth start of the season.
Edwin said, "The sweep here against a good team is great. The down side is what happened the other night. Other than that, a good three wins."
Logan Morrison scored an RBI single in the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead that the pitcher defended impressively to out-duel the Giants’ starter Ryan Vogelsong, who besides an RBI did not yield any run over his eight-inning spell.
