Round up: San Francisco Giants vs. Florida Marlins – MLB Update
It seems San Francisco Giants’ stars are experiencing extraordinary times, as the defending champions are having difficulty in winning games. Their recent stark failure came in the face of straight defeats against the Florida Marlins.
The three-game series that was scheduled to be played at AT&T Park, San Francisco witnessed the Giants being reduced like rubble by the Marlins. While a set of reasons can be attributed to their inability to overcome Florida, San Francisco had their disabled
list menacingly stretched.
If no one else, Buster Posey, a famous star catcher of the team, got injured that added to San Francisco’s woes. On Thursday, May 26 the last game also resulted in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Florida. Such a win against San Francisco at their home ground
can be a profound reason of joy. So it was for the Florida Marlins’ team manager.
"The sweep here against a good team is great," Florida manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "The down side is what happened the other night. Other than that, a good three wins."
However, San Francisco’s manager wanted to present a different version of what he thought of the series.
"We knew it was going to be a challenge to get some runs," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "Our guy did what we were hoping. We're going to have to start coming through. We can't live on the edge here every night."
It was Anibal Sanchez who pitched a shut-out game, having allowed only five hits, to win by 1-0 for Florida.
Earlier, the Marlins started the series with a confidence of a winning team. On Tuesday, May 24, which was the series’ first game, they beat the Giants 5-1. While their offence demonstrated an altogether different game, it was Ricky Nolasco that caused the
first defeat of the Giants on home ground.
Nolasco brilliantly pitched nine effectively solid innings to win his team a victory. Importantly, it came at a time when the Giants had a nine-game winning streak at home. The win was particularly special for Nolasco because it put to an end to the Giants’
special feat.
The series second game saw the Giants coming as a team willing to fight till end. However, what they lacked, was luck. The Giants fought and fought hard, but could not change the fate of the game as they lost 7-6.
The game went into the 12th inning when Scott Cousins, hit the tie-break run to give Florida a hard-earned but wildly anticipated victory. He was happy after the win, and understandably so.
The Series’ started with immense speculations as to who will carry the day. While the Giants were thought to be the likely winners owing to their previous record and being psychologically strong, the Marlins put up an incredible resistance to prove their
worth as a team.
A look at the performance of San Francisco does not present as a grim outlook. With 27 wins and 27 defeats, the Giants have a .551 PCT.
For the days to come, San Francisco has to revamp their strategy, bring necessary changes to prove their mettle. If they fail to do that, they are bound to be in trouble again.
