Round up --Tour of Beijing (October 5-9, 2011) ---- Part 3
Stage 3 saw the end of Yannick’s tour as a motorcyclist got hit by the board and then collided into him. The organizers took immediate notice of the incident and strictly advised that the helicopter maintained a fair distance for the rest of the stages.
In the longest stage of the Tour of Beijing 2011, stage 4, the cyclists covered a distance of 189.5 kilometres.
Elia Viviani bagged his 9th win at the conclusion of the season by winning stage 4. The Italian rider managed to end the race ahead of Peter Sagan and Juan Jose who secured second and third positions, respectively.
Delighted at his victory, he said,“Today was very very fast on big roads. The team was fantastic to me." He further added that, "Peter Sagan [who finished second], [Davide] Cimolai, all the team rode for me. We agreed that Peter would set me up for the sprint,
and I came off his wheel with 150m to go."
The 22 year old, Viviani had already demonstrated his excellence by winning the GP Costa degli Slovenia and Tour de Mumbai I. He also secured the 4th and 5th stage wins at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge 2011.
Tony Martin, David Millar and Christopher Froome continued to dominate the race as they secured the first three positions, respectively.
Russian rider, Denis Galimzyanov, made his way to the top of the point’s classification. He secured a total of 26 points while Elia Viviani and Christopher Froome scored 25 points each in the stage 4 classifications.
Team Sky Procycling grabbed the first position while Omega Pharma-Lotto, 59 seconds behind, secured second place. Stage 4 general classifications ranked Rabobank Cycling Team, Quick Step Cycling Team and Team RadioShack at 3rd, 4th
and 5th positions respectively.
Stage 5 of Tour of Beijing began on October 9th 2011.
Contending champions, David Millar and Christopher Froome, were the biggest threat to Tony Martin’s first position. Martin won the opening stage of the tour and went on to carry his lead to the fourth stage.
Denis Galimzyanov won stage 5 and declared it as the happiest moment of his life. The young rider also secured the green jersey by winning the points classification. Galimzyanov said, “Of course I am very, very happy because this is my first victory on the
pro tour.”
Denis scored a total number of 41 UCI points during the 5 day race. Elia Viviani scored 39 while Heinrich Haussler gained 30 points after the final general classifications.
No one was as ecstatic as Tony Martin who won the final general classifications. He won the race with a 17 seconds lead over David Millar and a 26 seconds lead over Christopher Froome. Tony was over the moon as he occupied the top podium position and made
history by winning the first ever Tour of Beijing race.
