Round-up day 4 – McGladrey Classic
It was a day that nobody could have anticipated in his wildest of dreams. Jim Furyk and Davis Love III would have thought that, after their three good rounds, the tournament was theirs.
The title was to be lifted by either of them. However, even they could not have imagined what happened on Sunday at the Seaside Course.
Tommy Gainey stole the show on Sunday with his magnificent 60, which not only set the course record but also helped him lift his maiden PGA Tour trophy.
Tommy, who has an unusual swing known as ‘Two Glove’, was about to break golf’s magical number of 59 but fell short of it by the slightest of margins.
Gainey, who wears the gloves on both of his hands, came from seven shots behind to lift the McGladrey Classic. It is the fourth time this year that a player has rallied from seven shots behind to lift the trophy on the final day.
"Oh, man," Gainey said. "Ninety-nine percent of these guys have already won, and won majors, big tournaments. The only show I can say I've won is the 'Big Break'"
He added, “Now I can sit here and say I've won the McGladrey Classic here at Sea Island, and I'm very proud to be in this tournament and very proud to win. And wow, it's been a whirlwind day”.
The overnight leaders, Jim Furyk and Davis Love III, could not keep up the momentum going and registered a third and a T4 finish, respectively.
David Toms also had one of the best days at the tournament. He shot seven-under 63 to finish for a lone second place, just one shot behind Gainey.
"I was thinking about what kind of putt I was going to have before I ever hit the fairway," Toms said. "You get ahead of yourself and that's what happens."
Toms had his chance as well, on the last hole, but he bunkered his approach to fell just one shot short of Gainey.
The 37-year-old Gainey had to wait for more than two hours after his round to await the outcome of the final result.
These two hours in the club house were so far the most anxious moments of his life and now after winning he can definitely rejoice.
