Stage 5
After a slow start to the tour, Mark Cavendish finally proved his worth by winning the 158-kilometre stage five from Carhaix to Cap Fréhel. Cavendish bagged his 16th stage win of the year under difficult circumstances after a tough finish in Cap
Fréhel.
While commenting on the tour’s organisers, Cavendish said, “The organisers made it hard for us to have a bunch spirit in the first week of the Tour this year, that’s because we dominate last year and they tried to make a handicap for us so we started on
the back foot this year.”
Thor Hushovd retained his yellow jersey for one more day, while point's leader and a serious contender for green jersey, Rojas, lost 7 points and was left behind Gilbert for the green jersey.
Mark Cavendish with 45 points finished first, followed by Philippe Gilbert second with 35 points and Jose Joaquin Rojas finishing third with 30 points at stage 5. Tony Gallopin with 26 points and Geraint Thomas with 22 points were at fourth and fifth positions,
respectively.
Turgot got the first position for intermediate sprint with Tristan Valentin and José Ivan Gutierrez Palacios.
The intermediate sprint for 70 kilometres at Goudelin was won by Sébastien Turgot with 20 points, while Tristan Valentin and José Ivan Gutierrez Palacios were at second and third positions with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
Anthony Delaplace of France won the 45.5 kilometre, Cote de Gurunheul Mountain 1 classification, while Tony Gallopin, Geraint Thomas and Daniel Oss were the top three young riders for stage 5.
José Ivan Gutierrez Palacios of Movistar Team won the most aggressive rider category.
Thor Hushovd, Cadel Evans and Frank Schleck shared the top three positions in the overall classification at the end of stage 5, with David Millar and Andreas Klöden at fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Points' classification after stage 5 was dominated by Philippe Gilbert of Omega Pharma-Lotto with 120 points followed by Jose Joaquin Rojas at 112 and Cadel Evans at 90 points.
Team Garmin- Cervelo was at number one, Sky Procycling at two, Leopard Trek at three, Team Radio Shack at four and HTC- Highroad was at number five after stage five teams' classification.
Stage 6
Stage 6 was held between Dinan and Lisieux and the longest stage of this year’s Tour de France, extending up to 226.5 kilometres.
Edvald Boasson Hagen took the first victory with another exciting sprint as Highroad cyclist beat Matt Gross and Thor Hushovd to finish the stage 6.
After winning the stage, he said, “I felt good yesterday but it went wrong and I really wanted to work hard to do well in today’s stage as Geraint Thomas did a good lead out and it’s just fantastic to win a stage of the Tour.”
The 28-year-old Dutch cyclist, Johnny Hoogerland, won the King of Mountains classification by winning the polka dot jersey. Malori won the aggressive award for his efforts as rain started, while the lead was left to only 29 seconds and he went for a successful
solo effort.
The 24-year-old managed to secure the first position for his team Sky Procycling at this year’s Tour de France followed by Matthew Harley Goss and Thor Hushovd.
Edvald Boasson was leading the points table with 45 points, Mathew Harley Goss second with 35 points and Thor Hushovd in the third place with 30 points. Anthony Roux scored 20 points for the 131 kilometres intermediate sprint at Vassy with Leonardo Fabio
and Lieuwe Westra scoring 17 and 15 points respectively.
Both Mountain 1 and Mountain 2 classifications of 99.5 kilometres and 156.5 kilometres were won by Johnny Hoogerland and Anthony Roux, respectively.
Edvald Boasson Hagen, Mathew Harley and Arthur Vichot were the top three young riders at stage 6, whereas Adriano Malori was the most aggressive rider of the stage 6.
Thor Hushovd, Cadel Evans, Fränk Schleck, David Millar and Andreas Klöden were at the top five positions in overall classification, respectively while Philippe Gilbert with 144 points, Jose Joaquin Rojas at 143 points and Thor Hushovd had 112 points in the
point’s classification table.
Teams’ classification remained undisturbed as Team Garmin-Carvelo maintained its first position with Sky Procycling at second, Leopard Trek at third, Team RadioShack at fourth and HTC-Highroad at the fifth position.
